Specialized fracture care for the hand and wrist, delivered by New Jersey’s leading microsurgeons.

A broken hand or wrist doesn’t just hurt — it interferes with everything. From gripping a coffee mug to returning to work or caring for your family, fractures in the upper extremity demand more than a cast and time. They require expert evaluation, precision treatment, and follow-through to ensure full recovery.

At The Center for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, a division of The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction, we treat fractures with one goal in mind: restoring strength, motion, and long-term function. Whether your injury is fresh or healing poorly, our team is here to help you move forward — with confidence and clarity.

What to Expect from Treatment

Before Surgery

01
Your care begins with a detailed evaluation by one of our hand surgeons. We use imaging to assess the fracture in detail — including the alignment of bones and any involvement of nearby nerves, tendons, or joints. Once surgical intervention is confirmed, we’ll walk you through your procedure plan, recovery timeline, and pre-operative instructions.

During Surgery

02
Surgical fixation is performed to realign and stabilize the broken bone using plates, screws, or pins. If the injury also involves soft tissue — such as nerves or tendons — our surgeons use advanced microsurgical techniques to repair those structures at the same time. Procedures are typically performed under regional anesthesia with sedation, and most patients return home the same day.

After Surgery

03
You’ll leave with a post-operative care plan tailored to your injury and lifestyle. Follow-up appointments will monitor healing progress, and hand therapy may be recommended to restore strength, range of motion, and fine motor control. While recovery times vary, many patients regain significant function within weeks — and continue to improve with guided rehabilitation. Our focus is always on delivering full, lasting recovery through expert surgical care.

What Sets Our Team Apart?

Treating fractures isn’t just about lining up bones — it’s about restoring full hand and wrist function with accuracy and speed. Our surgeons are among the most highly trained in the region, combining orthopedic, plastic, and microsurgical expertise. From the first imaging scan to your final grip-strength test, you’re in the care of doctors who treat these injuries every single day — and treat them right the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all fractures require surgery?
No. Many fractures heal well with immobilization, but displaced or unstable breaks — especially those involving joints — may need surgical repair.
How soon should I get treated?
As soon as possible. Prompt treatment improves healing outcomes and reduces long-term stiffness or deformity.
What does surgery involve?
Surgical fixation realigns the bone and secures it with plates, pins, or screws. In some cases, soft tissue repair is also needed.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
Most surgeries are performed with regional anesthesia and sedation, or general anethesia — you’ll be comfortable the entire time.
What if my fracture was already treated elsewhere but isn’t healing well?
We treat nonunion, malunion, and poorly healed fractures regularly. Our team specializes in second-opinion and revision procedures.
How long is recovery?
It depends on the location and severity of the fracture. Some patients regain function in weeks, others may need several months including therapy.
Will I need physical therapy?
Often, yes — especially for wrist and joint-involved fractures. We’ll refer you to trusted hand therapists as part of your plan.
Will I regain full use of my hand or wrist?
That’s always our goal. Early intervention and skilled care dramatically increase the chances of full recovery.
What if I’m not sure if it’s broken?
Don’t wait. Even a “sprain” could be a hairline fracture. Our team can evaluate and confirm with imaging.
Is this covered by insurance?
Yes. Fracture treatment — surgical or nonsurgical — is considered medically necessary and covered by most major plans, including Horizon and Cigna.

Don’t Let a Fracture Define Your Future

A fracture doesn’t have to mean lifelong limitations. Whether your injury is new or your recovery has stalled, we’re here to help you heal the right way — with expert guidance and world-class care at every step.
